Future aspects of science and technology in many fields such as physics, chemistry, material science, electronics, biology, medicine, etc. are characterized by miniaturization down to an atomic level. One promising method that offers such miniaturization is the ion beam manipulation technology. Over the years we have developed methods dealing with manipulation of ions in ion optical systems. These methods include, development of modeling and simulation programs that describe the ion behavior in ion optical systems, such as quadrupole ion guides, and ion traps. In particular simulation of ion behavior in Paul traps has been studied. This is based on a mathematical model that describes the distribution of a collection of ions in terms of its thermodynamic temperature. Though, the temperature of ions collected in a Very Large Paul trap (VLPTRAP), as they are cooled with buffer gas interaction, has been measured using the time distribution of extracted trapped ions and compared with the simulation. The results show an excellent agreement between the model and the experiment. Extrapolating from the results leads to the prediction that the collected ions cloud can be cooled to liquid nitrogen temperature, or even to liquid helium temperatures. This will allow delivery of the cooled collection of ions with low emittance and high brightness to very small area of the order of nanometer diameter, which may leads to the future applications of such beams in the fast growing field of nanotechnology. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). Filtered and federated searching is employed to facilitate focused searching so that learners can find the right resource with least effort and in minimum time. NDLI provides user group-specific services such as Examination Preparatory for School and College students and job aspirants. Services for Researchers and general learners are also provided. NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
