Abstract	Basic equation of the water hammer in pipelines belongs to double-curve partial equation of first order. And water hammer is calculated primarily by MOC. The Finite Difference method (FD) based on the method of characteristics was used to solve numerically the nonlinear two-parameter equations governing water hammer The finite fixed mesh was applied to obtaining the discrete form of the governing equations and discrete flow field. It is testified by case and comparing with MOC that FD method has broad prospect of application in calculating the water hammer in pipeline Therefore, it is necessary to conduct further research.
