Abstract	A microwave doppler sensor is a very popular device for detecting moving objects such as human beings. This paper proposes a new appliance-control method using microwave Doppler sensors. The user moves his/her hand back and forth in front of the target appliance for the proposed system. The system recognizes 1) two types of gesture, 2) the direction of hand movement, and 3) the number of hand movements. A prototype system with two light fixtures was developed. The gesture was detected within two seconds in real-time operation. A total of 200 on/off commands were experimentally evaluated. As a result, 85% of the gestures were correctly detected and 3% were misdetected with incorrect appliance selection. The remaining 15% generated no response.
