Abstract	There is a growing concern about the quality of education at all educational levels. The new environment of the European Higher Education System involves the search for novel teaching approaches which improve the quality of the current university teaching. As a way to ensure the quality of teaching it's considered necessary evaluate the skills students. The students must acquire critical capacity and a set of skills such as the ability to work in a multidisciplinary team, the ability to adapt to new situations, skills in oral and written communication, information search, solving problems. So, the traditional educational system must change to a different model, focused on the students learning and supported by active methodologies [7]. The article analyzes the characteristics and the educational role of a portfolio as a new tool for learning. We have created a portfolio for the subject "Databases" of the second course of Computer and Information Systems Degree. The work in portfolio is individual and is reinforced by a feedback-based teacher support mechanism that helps the students to acquire the necessary skills to understand and pass the subject.
