Temporal Coverage | 1862-1862 |
Description | The Daily Union Appeal, established in 1862 in Memphis, Tennessee, emerged during the Civil War as a Union paper in response to the Confederate-leaning Memphis Daily Appeal. Samuel Sawyer took over as publisher, but the paper's survival beyond August 30, 1862, remains unclear. Meanwhile, the Confederate Memphis Daily Appeal persisted through the war's upheavals, relocating multiple times to evade Union forces. After the war, it resumed publication in Memphis, eventually merging with the Memphis Avalanche to form the Appeal-Avalanche. Financial struggles led to its acquisition by the Memphis Commercial in 1894, resulting in the birth of the Memphis Commercial Appeal, which remains in publication today. NDLI hosts contents from/of year 1862 of this newspaper. |
