Temporal Coverage | 1862-1862 |
Description | The Memphis Union Appeal emerged in 1862 during the Civil War, replacing the Confederate-leaning Memphis Daily Appeal after its relocation to Grenada, Mississippi. Led by Samuel Sawyer, it aimed to support Union interests in the region. However, its existence was brief, with the last known issue published in August 1862. Meanwhile, the original Memphis Daily Appeal, nicknamed the "Moving Appeal," continued its publication across several Southern cities until Union troops captured it in 1865. After the war, the Appeal's staff returned to Memphis and relaunched the paper. In 1894, it merged with the Memphis Commercial to form the Memphis Commercial Appeal, which remains active today. NDLI hosts contents from/of year 1862 of this newspaper. |
