Description | The Gale, a newspaper published in Iuka, Mississippi, during the late 19th century, provided insights into the life and politics of Tishomingo County. Initially known as the Cosmic Gale, it evolved into a well-organized four-page weekly, featuring columns on national and foreign affairs, Southern events, farming, and local news. While maintaining allegiance to the Democratic Party, the paper changed hands multiple times. Under different owners, it underwent title changes, such as the Iuka Reporter and later, The Vidette. These transitions brought diverse content, including serialized stories, syndicated sermons, and editorials endorsing political candidates. The newspaper also chronicled local history, including reminiscences of the Civil War battle fought in Iuka and the town's development into a prosperous resort destination. NDLI hosts contents from/of year 1888 of this newspaper. |
