Description | Harrison, a community in northwestern Nebraska, earned the moniker "Nebraska’s Top Town" due to its high elevation of 4,876 feet. Initially named after President Benjamin Harrison, it reached its peak population of around 500 residents in 1940. Situated near the Agate Fossil Beds and close to Wyoming and Sowbelly Canyon, Harrison boasts scenic surroundings. In 1888, W.E. Patterson established a newspaper known initially as the Journal before adopting the name Sioux County Journal. Despite several changes in ownership and editorial direction, the paper remained a Republican publication, advocating issues like the Herd Law to protect small holdings from rancher's livestock. Later, it evolved into the Democratic-leaning Harrison Press-Journal, reflecting the political shifts of the time. NDLI hosts contents from/of year 1888 of this newspaper. |
