Temporal Coverage | 1861-1861 |
Description | Established on January 26, 1861, The Kingwood Chronicle of Kingwood, Preston County, Virginia (now West Virginia) was founded by brothers George and Amos Row with the aim of being an independent journal, eschewing political partisanship. However, amid the tumult of the secession crisis, the Chronicle inevitably took a stance, leaning toward Unionist sentiments. Despite financial struggles and threats of violence from Confederate sympathizers, the Chronicle provided valuable insight into the political chaos of the time. Publication ceased after just eight months in August 1861, leaving a brief but significant mark on the historical record of western Virginia during the Civil War era. NDLI hosts contents from/of year 1861 of this newspaper. |
