Description | The Fremont Journal was founded by I. W. Booth on January 27, 1853, in Sandusky County, Ohio. Initially aligned with Whig interests, it shifted to support the newly organized Republican Party in 1854 under John Mastin's ownership. Isaac M. Keeler later joined as co-owner, eventually becoming the sole proprietor and editor. During the Civil War outbreak, Keeler briefly produced a daily edition. After his tenure, the Redway Brothers took over, emphasizing Union principles and county interests. Ownership changed hands until Keeler regained control in 1877, renaming it The Fremont Journal. Despite ownership shifts, the paper maintained its diverse content, including Lucy Elliot Keeler's popular column. The paper was sold multiple times until its presumed closure in 1927. NDLI hosts contents from/of year 1861 of this newspaper. |
