Description | The American Union, born out of the tumultuous period of the Civil War, emerged briefly in Martinsburg, Virginia (now West Virginia), as Union soldiers seized the offices of the Virginia Republican to establish their own newspaper. Led by Captain William B. Sipes, formerly an editor for the Pottsville Register, the soldiers-turned-editors produced a patriotic publication aimed at bolstering morale among Union forces and reaching out to the local population with messages of friendship and reassurance. Despite its short lifespan of just one week, the American Union provided soldiers with news, entertainment, and a platform to express their convictions about the war's righteousness and the restoration of the Union. NDLI hosts contents from/of year 1861 of this newspaper. |
