Description | "The American," published in Washington, DC, by C.W. Fenton, served as the organ of the American Party from July 31, 1857, to December 31, 1857. The American Party, also known as the Nativists or Know-Nothings, espoused strong anti-immigrant sentiments, portraying immigrants as troublemakers seeking to alter American values. The party advocated for the rights of native-born citizens, primarily white Protestants descended from pre-Revolutionary War immigrants, to the exclusion of others, including American Indians. Despite attempts to defend its principles, the American Party faced declining popularity, hastened by a riot at the voting polls. The paper transitioned to a weekly format in January 1858, under the name "Weekly American," but failed to garner sufficient support and ceased publication on June 12, 1858. NDLI hosts contents from/of year 1857 of this newspaper. |
