Description | The Home Journal, launched in 1856 by George E. Purvis and William J. Slatter as a successor to the Winchester Appeal, emphasized local interests over politics. Purvis later left, engaging in other journalistic endeavors, while Slatter continued the publication. During the Civil War, it transformed briefly into the Winchester Daily Bulletin, expressing staunchly anti-Union sentiments. However, Union occupation halted its printing temporarily. Resuming post-war, it reverted to the Home Journal title until the late 1880s. The paper's conservative stance persisted through various ownership changes until 1896, when it merged with the Franklin County News, forming the News Journal. NDLI hosts contents from/of year 1857 of this newspaper. |
