Description | The Volcano Weekly Ledger, launched in 1855, initially advocated for Volcano's growth and campaigned to move Amador County's seat there. However, as Volcano's gold supply dwindled, Thomas A. Springer moved his operations to Jackson. There, he established The Weekly Ledger in 1857, which later became the Amador Weekly Ledger. Supporting Republican views during the Civil War, it opposed the Southern-aligned Amador Dispatch. Springer's political involvement led to success, and in 1875, the paper dropped "weekly" from its title. Under various ownership changes, it merged with the Amador Record in 1921, and later with the Amador Dispatch in 1989, becoming the Amador Ledger-Dispatch. NDLI hosts contents from/of year 1857 of this newspaper. |
