Description | Established in 1888 by John D. Hewitt and Charles P. Latham, the Flat Top Monitor served as Mercer County's "official organ" in Bramwell, West Virginia. Reflecting Republican politics, it backed candidate Nathan Goff, Jr. in the 1888 gubernatorial election. Beyond politics, it covered national news, Southern affairs, industrial developments, and local mining operations. Despite boasting a large circulation, ownership changed in 1891 to J.F. Haas and A.A. Barr, and the paper ceased publication around that time for unknown reasons. Surviving issues shed light on Mercer County's rapid growth during the coal boom. NDLI hosts contents from/of year 1891 of this newspaper. |
