Description | The Daily Banner, a short-lived edition of the long-standing Bennington Banner, emerged in 1891 alongside a special edition to commemorate Vermont's centennial and the opening of the Bennington Battle Monument. Established in 1841 as the State Banner to represent the Whig Party, it underwent several title changes before adopting the name Bennington Banner in 1858. The paper played a vital role in documenting and promoting Bennington's historical legacy, including the pivotal Battle of Bennington during the Revolutionary War. Throughout its history, the Banner was under the influence of three prominent families: the Cooks until 1870, the Pierces until 1897, and the Howes until 1956. Known for its support of Whig and Republican positions, the Banner evolved to include extensive coverage of local and regional news, becoming a primary news source for southern Bennington County and eastern New York. Despite its brief existence, The Daily Banner contributed to the paper's longstanding commitment to recording and celebrating the region's history and development. NDLI hosts contents from/of year 1891 of this newspaper. |
