Description | Drawing for a five-panel comic strip showing Mutt and Jeff in the Navy during World War I. Mutt reads about liberty bonds in the newspaper and decides that everyone should get one. When Jeff says he received his ten years ago, Mutt gets upset because liberty bonds are new. Nevertheless, Jeff shows Mutt his divorce decree, which he argues is his "liberty bond." Bud Fisher took his recurring character from his sports cartoons in 1907 and named the comic strip "A. Mutt." In 1908, when the tall, skinny Mutt met his shorter companion, Jeff, the comic strip took off as "Mutt and Jeff." Fisher used numerous assistants over the years, including Al. Smith who drew the feature from 1932 to 1980. The feature ended after an impressive 75-year run in 1982. |
