Description | Six-panel comic strip shows tall lanky Mutt with his feet in a pan of water complaining that after getting wet in the rain, he had caught a cold and lost his appetite. When his friend, the tinyJeff, laughs at his predicament, Mutt pours a pitcher of water over his head and ties him in a chair placed between a fan and an open window. Mutt and Jeff was one of the earliest daily comic strips. It began appearing in 1907 featuring Mutt, but Jeff was added in 1908. The strip was wildly popular, and Bud Fisher, who had had the forethought to copyright the title and concept, became so wealthy that by the end of World War I, he had turned over most of the work to his assistants. The strip continued under various artists until 1982. |
