Description | Two-panel comic strip shows Dilly O' Th' Valley (guardian of the Valley of the Shmoon) and Li'l Abner showing several pieces of paper to a group of dumbfounded Democratic leaders (Secretary of State Dean Rusk, Ambassador John Kenneth Galbraith, Senators Robert and Edward Kennedy, and Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara). Li'l Abner announces, "Dilly O' Th' Valley got th' solutions to ev'ry nashunal problum!!" Galbraith agrees, "They're sure-fire!!" and McNamara says, "S-somebody had better call Lyndon." Grinning evilly, Robert Kennedy calls and when his brother asks, "W-what d-did he say?" responds, "What could he say? He's stepping aside!!" It was widely known that there was no love lost between President Lyndon Johnson and Robert Kennedy, brother of the late president John F. Kennedy. In later strips it is revealed that Dilly's solution relies on the Shmoos, lovable creatures who supply all the world's wants. Al Capp first introduced the Shmoos in 1948. Their unlimited supply of unselfishness ultimately destroyed society, and they had to be confined to the Valley of the Shmoon. |
