Description | Twelve-panel comic strip shows Popeye, Olive Oyl, Swee'pea and Wimpy wandering through the desert. Wimpy sees a flower growing through the eye of the skull of a cow, and begins to rave, launching into a long poem, deploring his own imminent demise and the unfairness that the flower should live on in the skull of the cow. He finally pulls up the flower by the roots, but then continues the poem this time deploring his cruel action. Segar launched Thimble theatre in 1919, but did not introduce Popeye the Sailor until ten years later. Popeye was such a success that the strip was eventually renamed for him. Wimpy joined the strip in 1932. |
