Description | Comic strip shows Olive Oyl castigating her father, Cole Oyl, for coming home with muddy feat. When her beau, Ham Gravy, comes to ask Olive's father for her hand in marriage, the result is the sound of blows. Later, Olive congratulates her father on his cleaned shoes, while Ham tries to clean footprints off the seat of his pants. This is an early cartoon from the strip Thimble theatre, originated by Segar in 1919. Ten years later, Segar introduced Popeye the Sailor as a passing character. Popeye was such a success that he replaced Ham Gravy as Olive Oyl's love interest, and Ham faded from the strip. The strip was eventually renamed for Popeye. |
