Description | Photographs and other visual materials related to African Americans in the military. Many show Buffalo soldiers and World War I service men from the 803rd Pioneer Infantry Battalion. The Civil War is represented primarily through views of slaves, plantations and Union troops in South Carolina taken by Henry Moore about 1862. Other civil war related images include two portraits of freed slave children, and 12 patriotic envelopes. World War I ephemera include a military service certificate and a sheet music cover depicting African American soldiers. This group also has an embroidered 3rd Army combat service identification badge from 1945. |
