| Description | The bulk of the material (photographs from 1980 to 2001) show Parks at events, programs, award ceremonies and speaking engagements primarily in the United States, with some events in Canada, Japan and Sweden. Subjects include birthday celebrations, church activities, college commencements; activities of the Congressional Black Caucus; the Presidential Medal of Freedom and Congressional Gold Medal award; programs of the Rosa & Raymond Parks Institute for Self Development; the Million Man March (1995). Also, family reunions and social gatherings with friends in California and other unidentified locations. A number of photographs show Parks in early studio portraits, posing with other activists, politicians and celebrities (nos. 1-169, box 1), at NAACP programs in Los Angeles, California and Detroit, Michigan (nos. 725-965, box 5). Rosa Parks' family are represented in over 200 images, including her mother Leona Edwards McCauley, father James McCauley, grandmother Louisa McCauley, brother Sylvester McCauley and other extended family members. About 6 images depict her husband Raymond Parks (nos. 261-263, 1013, 1021). There are many other unidentified snapshots throughout the collection, some depicting her brother Sylvester McCauley during his years of military service, circa 1945 (box 12). Oversize material include three handmade cards from children, one signed poster for the film Ray (filed in OSE size). |
