Description | Photographs show views of cities, towns, and villages; daily life and occupations in urban and rural settings; prominent monuments and landmarks, archaeological sites and ancient buildings in Egypt. Depicted in Alexandria are the harbor, Place Mohammed Ali, a "tarboush" (fez) shop and silk bazaar. In Cairo are shown the Gezireh Palace,t he Khedivial Palace, Tombs of the Khalifs, Shepherds Hotel, the Savoy Hotel, the Place d'Opera, street scenes, Ezbekiyeh Palm Gardens, a wedding procession, a funeral, Arab soldiers, a London rifle brigade, street peddlers, and the mosques of Mohammed Ali, el Muaiyad, Sultan Kalaun, Sultan Barkuk and Sultan Hassan. Other locations portrayed include Tanta, a village near Alexandria; the Suez Canal, the obelisk at Heliopolis, a Bisharin village; the bazaar, a grain market, and railroad station at Assuan (Aswān); and a Muslim cemetery, pupils and teachers at the American Mission schools for girls and boys at Assut (Asyūṭ). Among the archaeological sites shown are the the pyramids and the Sphinx, including an image of "our photographer" on top of a pyramid; Luxor, Karnak; the Colossi of Thebes, Medinet Habu, the Tombs of the Kings, and Der el-Bahri at Thebes; and the Temple of Edfu and Philae. Images of Luxor also include a water jug seller, women water carriers, and dancing girls. |
