Description | Photographs show buildings, street scenes, people, and activities primarily in Alexandria and Cairo, as well as ruins of ancient structures. Alexandria images depict Pompey's pillar, fishermen, the Jewish and Arab quarters, an Arab teacher and pupils, and numerous street scenes. In Cairo are shown the Citadel, interiors of mosques, a university in Cairo (probably Al-Azhar), coffee houses, "muscle dancers," craftsmen such as a gunsmith and swordsmith, a street poet, camel traders from Sudan, a wedding procession, a funeral, street acrobats, the "sacred carpet" procession, and mummies and sculpure at the Gizeh museum. Also included are ruins of ancient monuments at Sakkara, Gizeh (the Sphinx and pyramids), Philae, Edfu, Abu Simbel, Abydos, Karnak, Denderah, Luxor, Habu, and Kom Ombo. The Nile cataracts, irrigation, the Suez Canal and "Bizhareen" (Bisharin or Beja) people are also shown. |
