Description | Cartoon shows President William Howard Taft, climbing out of the pages of a book labeled "GOP History," and tapping his son, Senator Robert A. Taft, on the shoulder as the latter strides away with a bag labeled "Delegates." In 1952, when Senator Taft campaigned for the Republican presidential nomination, he was accused of trying to steal convention delegates from his rival, General Eisenhower. The cartoonist compares this to the election of 1912 when President Taft, campaigning for a second term as president, used his power in the Republican convention to prevent the seating of delegates supporting Theodore Roosevelt. |
