Description | Cartoon shows a fat confidence man (labeled "War") saying "Come on! You can't lose" and offering a shell game (decorated with swastikas) to a small Japanese man wearing formal attire. Italian leader Mussolini, wearing a ragged uniform and showing his empty pockets, warns against the game. In 1941, after Mussolini joined forces with Hitler, the Italian army suffered one embarrassing defeat after another in North Africa and the Balkans. The cartoon was drawn only a few days before the bombing of Pearl Harbor, as Japanese diplomats in Washington carried on "peace talks" with the U.S. government. |
