Description | Cartoon shows John Q. Public sitting at the breakfast table and unable to eat the bite of food on his fork because Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev's 100 megaton bomb hangs over his head like the sword of Damocles. Cartoonist Gib Crockett uses the direct quotation from Khrushchev, who threatened, "The 50-and 100-megaton bombs will always hang over their heads like the sword of Damocles." The Soviets detonated Big Ivan, also called the Tsar Bomba, on October 30, 1961. While it had no practical use as a military weapon, it worked well as a diplomatic one. |
