Description | Cartoon shows a group of old codgers in Squash Center, sitting around on cracker barrels, discussing the Agricultural Marketing Act, passed in June 1929 to provide farm relief. The law, passed after numerous attempts to give agriculture the kind of support given industry, turned out to be ineffective. Berryman had little sympathy with the concerns of farmers. His rural layabouts show little understanding of the terms of the bill, and he suggests that laziness may be their problem. The proprietor says, "Now you fellers can give me some relief by paying up a bit," and another man suggests, "Reckon the boys can git back to work now thet they are relieved." |
