Description | Cartoon shows the old codgers from Squash Center, sitting around on cracker boxes, discussing the first Q Conference, one of the meetings between British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and President Roosevelt and their staffs during World War II. One man, holding a newspaper reading "Squash Center Gazette, Conference Costing Canada Eight Thousand," comments, "Canady's ration pints is bein' hit hard, by heck." Another says, "If Teddy'd been there, I bet them Japs wouldn't hev got away from Kiska." (Kiska was an Aleutian Island evacuated by Japanese troops shortly before an Allied invasion force landed in August, 1943.) Another says, "Wonder what's become of Harry Hopkins?" (Roosevelt aide Hopkins was ill during the meeting.) Another says, "Do you reckon Cordell Hull'll bring a trade agreement back with him?" (Secretary of State Hull was known for his belief that trade agreements were necessary for world peace.) One says, "They ought to listen to Henry Wallace. He's a real fightin' man." (Vice President Wallace was pushing strongly for decisions regarding postwar settlements.) Another says, "What do you suppose they're gonna tell Stalin if they don't dig up a second front?" (Stalin was angry that the Allies had not yet come to his aid by invading Europe. At this conference Churchill and Roosevelt did come to an agreement regarding the Normandy landings.) Finally, one old gentleman says, "If they're doin' anything up at Q, they're keepin' mighty quiet about it;" another says, "Well, Washington's quiet, too, and that's somethin'"; while a third says, "Bet we'd hear somethin' if Ham Fish was up there." (Hamilton Fish was a colorful and controversial congressman from New York.) |
