Description | Cartoon shows a group of Democratic and Republican politicians as rustic characters gathered at a country store, discussing national defense. President Roosevelt suggests, "Wait'll you hear my fireside [talk], tonight!" Republican Senator Arthur Vandenberg snorts at the report that the president may add a Republican to his cabinet, saying, "Coalition, my eye," while Republican Frank Knox, who was rumored to be a candidate for Secretary of the Navy, holds a paper reading, "I hear you calling me!" Secretary of State Cordell Hull says, "I been tellin' you boys," while Secretary of the Treasury Henry Morgenthau, Jr., boasts, "Betcha I can make an airplane." Harry Hopkins, head of the Works Progress Administration, suggests "Why don't you let W.P.A. do it?" Senator Hiram Johnson, a staunch isolationist says, "Better mind our own business!" while another man growls, "That New Deal outfit can wreck the country quicker'n Germany. I remember N.R.A!" Former Republican presidential candidate, Afred M. Landon, a moderate internationalist, warns "Us Republicans gotta watch our step." In the foreground, Republican Senate Minority Leader, Charles McNary and another man appear to be about to exchange blows, both saying, "We're the only ones in trim." In the background, turbulent labor leader, John L. Lewis, stands glumly, holding a monkey wrench, a symbol of his continued support of labor unrest in the face of a national emergency. By May 1940, the country had come to realize that Hitler's startling victories in Europe constituted a threat to the United States. |
