Description | World War II cartoon shows workmen loading scrap metal labeled "Social Gains," "Guns and Butter, Too," "40 Hour Week," and "St. Lawrence Seaway Project" into a truck with a large sign on its side showing a picture of Uncle Sam urging, "Get in the Scrap." President Roosevelt, standing at the door of the White House says, "I'm going to look the house over again -- Come back later and I may have some more scrap for you." In 1942, a nationwide scrap metal drive was launched with the aim of collecting 17,000,000 tons of scrap. On September 15, Roosevelt announced that 5 tons had been collected at the White House. Berryman compares this with the consumer products and social gains that have had to be sacrificed in the interests of the war. He notes in particular that the planned St. Lawrence Seaway was among the developments that had been deferred. |
