Description | World War II cartoon shows Secretary of the Interior Harold Ickes taking down a sign reading "H. Ickes, Coal Mine Boss" and telling United Mine Workers President John L. Lewis (shown as a coal miner) to "stay on the job." In May 1943, after Lewis defied the National War Labor Board and launched a series of strikes, the government took over the management of the mines. On October 12, Ickes announced that the last of the mines had been returned to the owners' control. Unlike many other government officials, Ickes felt that the best way to continue to produce the coal necessary for the war effort was to negotiate with Lewis. |
