Description | World War II cartoon shows Leon Henderson, head of the Office of Price Administration, immobilizing a car (driven by Uncle Sam) by hammering nails into the tires. Federal Petroleum Coordinator Harold Ickes, holding a paper reading "How to Save Gas," says "Now why didn't I think of that!" After the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor and the United States joined the war, Ickes issued a number of orders designed to increase the supply of aviation gasoline. A few days later, Henderson ordered tire rationing, a move designed to save rubber, but one that would also cut down on civilian use of gas. |
