The most important partnership between two chords is the tonic/dominant relationship is discussed. It is the relationship between the first chord, the tonic, and the fifth chord, the dominant note, of any scale. The dominant note relies on the tonic cord. Subdominant is then discussed. This is a third chord after the tonic and the dominant chord. These three chords, the tonic, the dominant, and the subdominant were very crucial in the centuries that followed became known as the primary triads.
