Abstract	It is a great pleasure for me to be able to participate in the 9th International Scientific Wadden Sea Symposium here in Nordemey and to speak this evening. I would firstly like to thank the Common Wadden Sea Secretariat and the National Park Administration of the Lower Saxon Wadden Sea for inviting me here and for arranging for my involvement in the Symposium. I am also pleased to pass on to the organisers greetings and best wishes from Dr. Ian McPhail, the Chairperson of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority.I have been asked many times — “Why is someone from Australia participating in a Wadden Sea Scientific Symposium?” You may think that Australia and the Great Barrier Reef are a long way away. I can assure you, they are. But over the last two days, it has been reconfirmed to me time and again that management of the Great Barrier Reef has much in common with management of the Wadden Sea.This evening I would like to share with you some of the magic of the Great Barrier Reef and some of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority’s experiences in coordinating the development of a long-term strategy for the protection and ecologically sustainable use of the Great Barrier Reef — The 25 Year Strategic Plan for the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area — an agreed ecosystem-wide strategic framework for long-term planning, for management, for research and for education, to ensure the Great Barrier Reef remains a healthy, self-renewing environment.
