Abstract	Quelque 150 ans après I’æuvre de Maxwell, cet article retrace les différentes étapes depuis les précurseurs jusqu’au triomphe de sa théorie au début du xx$^{e}$ siècle. On y mentionne les grandes idées et expériences qui ont mené au travail de synthèse de Maxwell. On parle ensuite des arguments de ses détracteurs et des vérifications expérimentales qui ont débouché sur le triomphe de la théorie de I’ électrodynamique de Maxwell. On voit ensuite que cette théorie, bien que parfaite, n’aurait pas pu contribuer pleinement aux avancées technologiques sans la naissance des calculateurs. Finalement, une analyse montre qu’avec le développe-ment de l’informatique et la synergie avec d’autres disciplines, l’électromagnétisme est appelé à jouer un rôle important dans la course pour les systèmes de télécommunication dufutur.Some 150 years after Maxvell’s work, this paper presents the different steps from his precursors to the triumph of his theory at the beginning of the XX$^{th}$ century. The great thinking and experiments which led to the synthesis carried out by Maxwell are mentioned. Then, arguments presented by his detractors and experimental validations which led to the verification of the electrody-namic theory are discussed. Also, the paper discussed the impact of the computers to the relevance of the electromagnetic theory to the technological developments. Finally, a discussion shows that with the development of computers and the synergy with other disciplines, the
