| Abstract | Peroxides can enhance field-stimulated [$^{3}$H]norepinephrine ([$^{3}$H]NE) release in isolated irides from several mammalian species. In the present study, we investigated the role of prejunctional α$_{2}$-adrenoceptors in peroxide-induced potentiation of sympathetic neurotransmission in bovine isolated irides. Isolated hemi-irides were incubated in a Krebs buffered-solution containing [$^{3}$H]NE and prepared for studies of neurotransmitter release using the superfusion method. α$_{2}$-Adrenoceptor agonists, oxymetazoline, UK-14304 and clonidine inhibited field-stimulated [$^{3}$H]NE overflow without affecting basal tritium efflux. Pretreatment of tissues with H$_{2}$O$_{2}$ (300 μM) had no effect on inhibition of evoked [$^{3}$H]NE release caused by the α$_{2}$-adrenergic agonists. However, H$_{2}$O$_{2}$ (300 μM) caused significant (P < 0.01) leftward shifts of excitatory concentration-response curves to yohimbine (10 nM–1 μM). In contrast, yohimbine (1 μM) did not prevent the enhancement of evoked [$^{3}$H]NE overflow induced by H$_{2}$O$_{2}$ (300 μM). In conclusion, excitatory effects of peroxides on sympathetic neurotransmission in bovine irides are not mediated by prejunctional α$_{2}$-adrenoceptors. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). Filtered and federated searching is employed to facilitate focused searching so that learners can find the right resource with least effort and in minimum time. NDLI provides user group-specific services such as Examination Preparatory for School and College students and job aspirants. Services for Researchers and general learners are also provided. NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
