Abstract Nano-crystalline particles of CeO$_{2}$ have been synthesized by a low temperature hydrolysis method. The structural, morphological and optical properties were characterized by using X-ray diffraction (XRD), FT-IR, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive spectroscopy and UV–Vis spectra. XRD pattern confirmed the crystalline nature and cubic structure of synthesized composition. The size of CeO$_{2}$ nanoparticles increases with increase in concentration. The functional groups present in the sample were identified by FTIR spectroscopy. The microstructure and elemental identification were done by SEM with EDX analysis. The band gap energy is found to increase from 3.15 to 3.28 eV with increase in concentration.
