| Abstract | CdS, Cd$_{0.98}$Co$_{0.02}$S and Cd$_{0.96}$Mn$_{0.02}$Co$_{0.02}$S thin films were successfully deposited on glass slides by chemical bath deposition method. Microstructural and optical studies of the prepared films were carried out using scanning electron microscope (SEM), UV–visible spectrometer and photoluminescence spectra. SEM revealed the micro-structural change i.e., spherical like structure of Cd$_{0.98}$Co$_{0.02}$S was changed into more compact plate like structure by Mn-doping. Reduced crystallite size and the decrease of interplanar distance and lattice constant confirmed the proper substitution of Mn$^{2+}$ into Cd–Co–S. The enhanced energy gap by Co/Mn doping proved that Co/Mn doping in CdS is an effective way to utilize solar energy. The observed green emission band between 538 and 547 nm attributed the recombination of electrons trapped inside a sulfur vacancy with a hole in the valence band of the CdS. The change in PL intensity and peak position was explained by the combined effect of size by different sizes of Cd$^{2+}$ and Co$^{2+}$/Mn$^{2+}$ and impurity induced defect states. The antibacterial efficiency was found to be higher for Mn, Co dual doped CdS due to increase of surface area by reduced particle size. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
