| Abstract | Marble panels for outdoor cladding of buildings are generally fastened with mortar and/or anchors. Due to environmental influences (e.g. solar heat, rain and snow), such panels can start to bow and crack, such that eventually they may detach from the wall, possibly causing damage to humans and the environment. Different marble–mortar compounds have been tested for their mechanical and fracture-mechanical characteristics (adhesive strength, notch tensile strength, specific fracture energy, crack growth resistance and characteristic length) by means of the pull-out test and the wedge-splitting method. The propagation of a crack in the marble–mortar compound is characterized on the basis of fracture-mechanics and by use of the load displacement curve. The advantages of using a mortar bed rather than anchors are considered.Des plaques de marbre utilisées en revêtement de façades de bâtiments sont généralement accrochées au support avec un mortier ou un système d’agrafage. Le contexte environnemental local (ensoleillement, pluie et neige) fait que ces plaques peuvent commencer à se ployer ou se fissurer et dans certains cas se détachent du support, avec des dommages possibles aux personnes. Des mortiers de scellement de différentes caractéristiques mécaniques (adhérence, résistance à la traction avec encoche, énergie spécifique de fissuration, résistance à la croissance des fissures, longueur caractéristique) ont été testés au moyen d’essais d’arrachement et de fendage. La propagation de fissures dans le mortier de scellement a été caractérisée sur la base de la mécanique de la fissuration. Les avantages du mortier sur les systèmes d’agrafage sont soulignés. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
