Abstract The limit equilibrium method is commonly used for slope stability analysis, being relatively simple compared with finite element analysis. Both methods were used to analyse homogeneous and inhomogeneous slopes, taking into account the rapid drawdown condition, the undrained clay soils and the presence of tension cracks. The analyses were carried out using PLAXIS 8.0 (finite element method) and SAS-MCT 4.0 (limit equilibrium approach). The safety factor and location of the critical slip surface obtained from the two methods are compared.La méthode de calcul aux équilibres limites est classiquement utilisée pour les analyses de stabilité des pentes, car relativement simple par rapport aux calculs en éléments finis. Les deux méthodes ont été utilisées pour étudier la stabilité de pentes homogènes ou hétérogènes, considérant des situations de vidange rapide, des conditions non drainées pour des sols argileux et la présence de fentes de traction. Les analyses ont été réalisées avec le logiciel PLAXIS 8.0 (méthode des éléments finis) et le logiciel SAS-MCT 4.0 (méthode des équilibres limites). Les facteurs de sécurité et les positions des surfaces de rupture critiques obtenus par les deux méthodes sont comparés.
