NDLI: Frictional effects on mass measurements in a column of glass beads

Abstract	The apparent weight at the bottom of a column of granular material depends on several factors. According to Janssen’s formula one of those factors is p s /p, the ratio of the horizontal to vertical pressure. This paper studies the dependence of p s /p on the particle-particle frictional angle. The ratio of the horizontal to vertical pressure increases with the particle-particle frictional angle. It also suggests that the rate of increase depends on the packing method.
