Abstract This paper presents an investigation of the dynamic characteristics of drive at center of gravity (DCG) feed drives with the movable table being located at different positions along the direction X perpendicular to the feed direction Y. How the X-table position affects the transit response to a given feed is theoretically analyzed and then experimentally measured using a special test method based on double linear encoders. Both the simulation and experiment results obtained demonstrate that an incrementally more serious problem of motion asynchrony will occur at the two sides of the driven frame once the X-table leaves away from the centerline for the utmost right (or left) end of the Y-saddle. The problem becomes most serious when the table moves to the utmost right (or left) end of the Y-saddle and remarkable rotation vibration will be caused in this occasion for the driven frame. The measuring and analysis methods presented in the paper may help develop effective control ways to make proper compensation so as to eliminate synchronization errors and achieve high-precision motion synchronization for the DCG feed drives.
