| Abstract | Education does not always go hand in hand with the changes in social policies but it remains the key to the future and a way of allowing individuals to follow, understand and participate in the Portuguese democratic life. In Portugal, the adult education has suffered setbacks and advances which contributed to put the country in the tail of Europe regarding the academic qualifications of the adult population. In the domain of adult education there are not many researches, and they seldom listen to the students’ voices. This work is part of the Interaction and Knowledge project that studied and promoted collaborative work in formal education scenarios, seeking to give a voice to the students. Following an interpretative approach, we studied four case studies, two from students of the Sistema de Ensino por Unidades Capitalizáveis (SEUC) and two from the Sistema de Ensino por Módulos Capitalizáveis (SEMC). For data collection we used the participant observation, questionnaires, interviews, informal conversations, and documentary collection. The results illuminate students with different profiles. For their return to school they have personal and professional motivations. Students from SEUC criticise the individualistic teaching practices, common in this system. The students from SEMC regret not having some more collaborative works. They all claim that the materials adopted by the teachers seldom are the most adequate ones. The teachers should give priority to the analysis of issues/current problems, to prepare students for life. Giving voice to adult students is one way to contribute to their academic achievement. |
