| Abstract | In this essay, I present a historic overview of the contributions of forest engineering to the knowledge and management of biodiversity in Colombia, based on the analysis of publications related to sustainable forestry, forest soils, fauna and flora associated with forests, forest genetic improvement, dendrochronology, and land use planning and management. Focused on contributions from forest sciences at universities since the beginning of the last century, it was found that evidently the forest sector has done important contributions to the knowledge and management of biodiversity. The first professionals in the field educated in Colombia appeared in the early sixties, and since then have produced studies of botanical ecology and geography for Colombia. Currently, university work has approached novel and complex subjects that give high-quality information about the origin, dynamics, and biophysical circumstances of natural forests and tree plantations. |
