| Abstract | espanolA partir de la revision de la literatura disponible y de la reflexion sobre las relaciones e implicaciones de la genomica humana en la salud publica, el presente articulo se propone plantear y discutir algunas de las principales dimensiones de dicha relacion, e identificar algunos campos importantes para su seguimiento, su investigacion y su accion. La primera parte del documento se dedica a plantear la relacion entre ciencia y vida, reconociendo que el objetivo ultimo de la ciencia es tratar de contribuir a resolver la problematica planteada por la vida misma y a hacerla mas digna y agradable. Se describen a continuacion las principales areas de aplicacion, actual o potencial, de los nuevos conocimientos sobre el genoma humano a la salud publica, en especial en lo relacionado con la deteccion de la predisposicion a ciertas patologias, los componentes geneticos de la conducta humana y las alteraciones que introduce el nuevo saber en la percepcion que tenemos de nosotros mismos y de nuestras relaciones con las demas especies. Posteriormente, se formulan algunos de los interrogantes que se vienen planteando en diferentes escenarios, en relacion con implicaciones y dilemas eticos, investigativos, politicos y de formacion y practica medica, al tratar de utilizar, aplicar o limitar, los aportes actuales o previsibles del saber genomico. El documento, ademas, avanza con una propuesta polemica e innovadora. Se refiere a la posibilidad de que los avances en la genomica humana constituyan la base para construir un nuevo paradigma integrador de los niveles biologico y social en el conocimiento humano, superando un antiguo antagonismo y abriendo las puertas para un novedoso dialogo cientifico. En la parte final se enuncian algunas conclusiones preliminares, derivadas de las posibilidades y desafios generados a la salud publica por el nuevo saber genetico. EnglishThis article presents an overview of the relationship between human genomics and public health. Departing from a review of the available literature, it points out some important areas for future research and action in the field. Initially, the article exposes the relationship between science and life, explaining how one of the ultimate goals of science has been to answer problems posed by life itself in an attempt to improve its conditions. This is followed by a description of the main areas of present or potential application of newly acquired genomic knowledge in the field of public health, including the detection of predisposition to disease, the study of the genetic components of human behavior and a change in our self-perception and the perception of our relationships with other species. The article then focuses on the ethical, technical, political and educational dilemmas that arise when attempting to use or limit the use of present or predictable applications of genomic knowledge. A new proposal is then presented. It suggests the possibility that advances in human genomics may be the cornerstone of a new and integrative paradigm that brings together the social and biological dimensions of human knowledge. This would overcome an ancient antagonism and open the doors for a new kind of scientific dialogue. |
