| Abstract | The main objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of density and extractive content on color variation of Tectona grandis L. f. wood from plantation of different tree-spacing (5 x 2 m e 6 x 2 m). Trees were obtained from Cáceres, Mato Grosso and the logs were processed at the Laboratory of Wood Processing (DPF/IF/UFRRJ). Heartwood and sapwood samples with dimensions of 50 x 25 x 25 mm and perfectly oriented in three sections (transverse, radial and tangential) were used. Wood density was determined at 12% moisture while extractive contents were determined after extraction with three organic solvents: cyclohexane, ethyl acetate and methanol by using a Soxhlet extractor after 24 hours, for each solvent. Color analysis were performed on the CIE-L*a*b* system by using a CM 2600d spectrophotometer from Konica Minolta, which gave values for L* (lightness), a* (red) and b* (yellow) coordinates on radial and tangential sections. The results showed that less dense plantation (6 x 2 m) presented denser wood and with a higher extractive content. Denser heartwoods had more yellow hue (b*) in the radial section, while in tangential section, the denser heartwoods are darker (lower L*) and have less yellow hue (b*). Denser sapwoods are darker (lower L*) and have more red hue (a*) in both radial and tangential sections. Darker woods (lower L*) present more red hue (a*) and higher extractive content. The color coordinates varied according to the section observed. |
