| Abstract | Corn is one of the most important cultivated species in the world, and has fundamental importance in human and animal nutrition. Corn is also one of the cultivated species that present the largest genetic variability, presenting many landraces. To use these landraces in breeding programs it is necessary that they be well characterized genetically and agronomically. The objectives of this work were to analyze corn landraces from Southern Brazil, in terms of agronomic traits, molecular markers, and cytogenetic aspects, and then to estimate the genetic relationships among the landraces. The molecular markers used in this work were microsatellite and AFLP. The analysis of the agronomic traits and molecular markers showed that there was genetic variability among the landraces. It was possible to estimate the genetic distance among the genotypes. The results of the cytogenetic analyses indicated that some landraces presented abnormalities in the pollen, but this did not affected reproduction. The data obtained might contribute to corn breeding programs guided towards the development of specific plant types. 2 Master of Science Dissertation in Agronomy, Faculdade de Agronomia, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil.
