| Abstract | In the translation industry, there are many pragmatic pressures and concerns that dictate procedures and working methods that differ from those that guide the teaching of translation in universities. These are for-profit organizations with limited resources (such as the time available for the specific training of workers or the limited number of CAT tool licenses), therefore, learning in these environments is mostly achieved through real work situations. In this internship report we use some translation jobs carried out for the company "Expressao Lda." during the internship to shine some light on the versatility demanded of the translator from the various tasks attached to the exercise of professional translation. We use the example of the structure and working methods in place in the company to make a comment on a notion of "quality" in the first part of the report. In the second part, using functionalist and special-purpose language theory (of Nord and Cabre, respectively) we use two jobs carried out during the internship a creative translation and a legal document transcription to give an account of the kind of problems that a translator faces in a professional translation company. In the final part of the report, we explore the business perspective on the importance of terminology, illustrating it with an online database adaptation project done for the company’s databases so that they could be shared with remote translators over the Internet. |
